At the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains, in the fertile west of Uganda, lies the Semuliki Valley –one of the country’s greenest and most vibrant regions. Here, more than 1,000 smallholder farmers cultivate cocoa on small plots, often no larger than two hectares, surrounded by banana trees, papaya, and natural shade trees.
The beans are freshly harvested and processed at a central fermentation station – a community-driven project that ensures fair prices for farmers and strengthens local infrastructure. Through careful fermentation and slow sun-drying, the cocoa develops its distinctive flavor profile: notes of red wine, oak, and cassis – deep, elegant, and lingering on the palate.
